Scott's brand new Lumen is the latest in lightweight downcountry e-MTB

The lightweight e-MTB category has exploded lately with a multitude of brands releasing low-power, lightweight, downcountry-orientated e-MTBs. Scott is the latest brand to enter the fray with its brand-new Lumen e-MTB.

Scott has taken its 130mm Spark 900 platform with its internally mounted shock and managed to squeeze a motor and a battery in there too. The motor of choice is the TQ HPR50 which has a 50Nm output and a weight of just 1.8kg. TQ are a German tech company that, despite still being new to the e-MTB scene, has found their way onto some of the best electric mountain bikes, including BMC's Fourstroke AMP LT and Trek Fuel eXE.

Scott's current e-MTB range consists of the Strike eRIDE and Patron eRIDE, although these are both longer travel, heavier e-MTBs. Opting for the TQ motor has allowed Scott to build a considerably lighter cross-country and trail platform with a very impressive weight if Scott's numbers are to be believed. In its lightest build, Scott says the Lumen weighs just 15.5kg which makes it one of the lightest e-MTBs around.

To power the motor, the bike has a 360Wh battery, which can be bolstered with a 160Wh range extender mounted in the downtube bottle cage. The top-spec Lumen eRide 900 SL comes with the range extender included as well. To compliment the clean lines of the Lumen, Scott has integrated a display into the top tube and the motor is controlled using a minimalist handlebar remote.

Geometry isn't far off Scott's current Spark 900 downcountry bike. A 65.5-degree head angle, 77-degree seat angle, and 446cm reach should work well for the singletrack trails the bike is aimed at. You also get Scott's Twinloc suspension control which gives three shock positions (open, trail, locked out) that can be easily controlled from the handlebar. The two top-end models have Scott's neater Twinloc2 lever, while the two lower-priced models use the older design.

Scott's Lumen collection features four models: Lumen eRIDE 900 SL, Lumen eRIDE 900, Lumen eRIDE 910, and one dedicated Contessa model. All the bikes use Fox suspension front and rear with wheels and a finishing kit from their in-house brand Syncros. Schwalbe's fast-rolling Wicked Will tires are fitted to all the bikes.

The two top-end bikes are kitted out with wireless SRAM AXS drivetrains and are paired with Shimano brakes. The lower two models have matching Shimano brakes and drivetrains.
