Which Garmin should I buy?

Garmin offers a wide range of devices to cover all manner of activities and user preferences. To decide which device is best for you, there are a few things that you need to think about.

Firstly, you must decide whether you would be best of with a bike computer or a smartwatch. If you want to record daily health stats and track other activities, a smartwatch is going to be the best option. If you're only interested in recording bike rides then a head unit may work better.

On the bike, a smartwatch has the advantage of integrating a heart rate sensor and doesn't require any additional mounts to be fitted to your bike. Alternatively, a GPS head unit mounted on the handlebars will give much easier access to ride stats, training features, and navigation while riding. I usually choose a GPS head unit when I am gravel riding or bikepacking so I can easily follow a route and monitor progress, but prefer a smartwatch like the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar when I'm mountain biking.

Once you have decided what type of device you want, you will need to consider the features you are likely to use. Even the cheapest Garmin devices include a load of activity-specific metrics and the ability to connect to additional sensors, however as you move up the range you will see extra features such as training plans, navigation, and solar charging.
